Children's Counselling Services

Children's Counselling Services

Children's Counselling Programs

Counselling and group-work programs are available to children and these are provided in a way that supports and encourages them to communicate their feelings and experiences. This is achieved through offering a range of age-appropriate expressive therapies that best support this process.

Counselling for children takes place in our cheerful and well-equipped designated counselling rooms and children are encouraged to utilise a variety of creative mediums including painting, drawing, sand play and clay modelling.

Children attend counselling to address a wide range of issues. Parental/carer involvement is seen as integral to the counselling process and is supported by the framework offered by the children’s counselling team.

Children’s Drumbeat programs are offered as determined by numbers.

Some of the reasons parents bring children to counselling are:

  • trauma
  • separation/divorce, step family issues
  • family violence and abuse
  • family conflict
  • anxiety
  • behavioural issues
  • bullying
  • grief and loss

Drumbeat Program

Drumbeat Program

Drumbeat is a group-work program which can be run for children and can be adapted for adults. The groups are run when there is an identified need. Drumbeat can be helpful when people are lacking in confidence, have trouble socialising, or find difficulty in keeping their strong emotions in check.

Drumbeat is a 10 week program which involves using drums and music to explore different topics each week. Some of the themes for exploration include- relationships, harmony, identity, emotions and feelings and teamwork, among others. Drumbeat aims to assist participants in;

  • increasing  their confidence and self-esteem,
  • building their acceptance (of others and self),
  • increasing their sense of belonging, and recognition,
  • and can help participants in coping with strong emotions.

Participants don’t have to be musically proficient to do the group work.

Participants are encouraged to invite special friend/s relative/s to a performance at the end of the program

There is an emphasis in Drumbeat on participants having fun!

Comments from some of the children -

“Drumbeat is awesome!”

“I wish we could do it all over again”
